I bought several of these as gifts. I kept one to try out and was less than impressed. Most of the less than satisfactory reviews were accurate. It took a long time to lock satellites, needed a clear and wide view of the sky, and you had to walk or move several feet for it to register the direction towards the waypoint you saved (or even to use the compass). I will stick with my Garmin Etrex legend for the woods, my Nuvi for the car and my iPhone for everywhere in between. Yes, I’m a gadget hound.

Mixed results. This item is very easy to use. It does its basic job, which is to point you at the place you marked and get you within 15 yards of it. This is fine for locating your car in a huge parking lot. But you will have problems finding your way in a parking garage or indoor mall, where you cannot get GPS signals. Also, the compass function is unsatisfactory. It will keep seeking north, but never really find it. If you take a bunch of readings trying to find north, you can eventually average all the numerous varying pointings and come up with rough “north.” Some of these pointings will be 180o off, though, so it takes a while to average them and figure out where approximate north is. Yes, this device does it job, but I think one would be better off carrying a small notepad to jot down notes or a rough map of where the car is parked.

As some of the reviewers have said, the battery cover is an issue mostly because not enough information is presented in the instructions.

When shut and locked, the POINTS of the two small arrow heads are about opposite the two small dots on the main body. To remove the cover, rotate the cover clockwise about one quarter inch, to where the REAR of the two arrow heads are now about opposite the two small dots. Now turn the instrument face up. The back cover should drop off. If not, try rotating the cover a little farther. The total rotation movement will not be more than a half inch.

To improve the ease of rotating, Using a toothpick I put a tiny amount of vaseline inside the four locking plastic nibs before replacing and relocking the cover.

Make sure to turn the cover counterclockwise AS FAR AS POSSIBLE when locking the cover back in place.

I first used the BBT without an open view of the horizon, resulting that the arrow pointed about forty degrees off left on both marked locations and north. The distances were only several yards out (ie. GOOD), however, so I tried two ways to correct the arrow, one or both of which worked to perfection. First I removed the batteries for several hours, thinking to erase my sin, but alas not so(??). Next, although in my area I don’t have a perfect horizon, I spent an hour or so walking from one “good” area to another with the BBT turned on in those places with positive results. The north arrow is now within two or three degrees of true north and the location pointers are accurate at ten yards without dancing around.

It is my feeling, therefore, that “acquiring” the greatest number of satellites in my circumstances was not a singular act, but indeed an ongoing process.

I now give the BBT (Bushnell BackTracker) five stars…The instructions could have been more helpfull in this situation, however, so I only give them three stars.

I gave this item as a gift to my gadget loving husband. And he does love it. Says it works just fine. We were recently in Europe and it was very useful in finding our way back to the hotel after we were wandering around sightseeing. He takes it with him on business trips now along with his GPS for the car. A good companion piece.

Works great as advertized – this is my second unit – first one is still in use and I didn’t want to share -Have used it locally and also while flying (local flying club). Used it for hunting this year in an area I have never been in before and it easily got me and my deer out. Great unit.
