This was for my daughter christmas present, it can withstand a teenager abuse and it take clear nice pictures.

Consumer Reports rated this camera as a Best Buy. I LOVE it. My daughter borrows it when she goes to concerts….her $300 Sony camera doesn’t do as good a job as this one! Also have a friend that borrows it for special occasions. The price was excellent as well…..about $75 after using a coupon!

This is one camera you can’t go wrong with. Excellent facial recognition, zoom, stabilization in a handy durable pocket camera. Best buy for the money. Quality of pictures is excellent even when printed out at highest quality and size. Two thumbs way up. Nothing negative to comment on with this great pocket camera.

Beware. This is the first and last Canon product I will ever buy!

While it has many positive points outlined by other reviews as well as one of the few cameras that works with digiscoping, if it ever needs repair be prepared to shell out the price of the camera. Yes horrors I dropped the camera once onto the floor. That was enough to break off a teeny tiny tab in the battery door area rendering the camera non-functional. The camera was out of warranty but I expected the Visa extended warranty program to cover it. Not so. Canon claimed it was mishandling.

After the fact I did some internet searches and found out this is a common problem along with others having a moisture problems. It seems Canon customer Service is notorious for claiming it’s the customer’s fault and not honoring warranties.

In addition apparently the door can be bought sepepratly for about $10 and easily installed by anyone remotely handy with tools. However when I talked to customer service about the problem there was no suggestion to replace the part. They’d rather rip their customers off for the cost of the camera.

    The good:

    1) It’s compact enough to be taken anywhere U go,

    2) Good price to performance ratio,

    3) Manual controls in a compact camera with a view finder. Something that’s getting rare these days,

    4) Decent image quality under ISO 400. Good with macro photography.

    5) AA batteries give U the choice to upgrade to better quality batteries than proprietary batteries,

    6) Thank God it’s not one of those 10MP plus compact cameras. 8MP is still too much for me. I w’d have been happy with 6MP. I wonder when will the ‘more megapixel is better’ syndrome ever die out?

    The bad:

    1) Slow as X’mas. Best for casual photography & especially for still or slow subjects,

    2) Body has a very plasticy & cheap feel to it. It w’d have been great in a black matt finish like the one found on the Canon G10,

    3) Not able to preselect the size of the photograph. It’s fixed at 8MP,

    4) This is a 2008 model & is no longer in production.

    Conclusion:

If U want a fast digital camera then pls avoid buying this camera. Even the cheapest of DSLR cameras will kick this compact digital camera out of the water. But having said that, this is the kind of compact digital camera that can actually make U pick up photography if U are a beginner & help U learn the basics of photography. It c’d also be a good standby camera for a photography enthusiast who may already have a DSLR. In it’s time, it was one of the best compact cameras ever made under the 8MP category. I still enjoy using it for casual photography. I really wish Canon continues making such superb, highly capable, budget compacts with bigger sensors & less than 8MP size.

For the best experience, I use the Canon Powershot 590IS with Sandisk Extreme lll 4GB SDHC, Sanyo Eneloop AA rechargable batteries & La Crosse Technology BC-700 battery charger.
