   I got this one refurbished for 105$ from the beatch camera on [...]

   Comparing to my old canon sd 870 IS, the night shot is way better. The video quality is also good except the audio noise. But what would you expect from such a tiny body.

   I tend to buy point & shoot when there are enough reviews and when there are refurbished version so that I can get the best features for the money. I also have a test in store with canon sd1400IS, the replacement model. However, it is just some more pixels. I would go this one if it is 80-100$ cheaper. 12M is enough and both shoot 720p. The wide of the lens on this is enough for family and daily shots. If you most of time shoot group photos, then go for sd1400IS. but for most family users, sd780IS lens is wide enough.

   I would recommend any one get this if you

   (1) want above avg image quality and shoot HD video

   (2) have a DSLR and want a compact to carry with.

   I just love this camera. The picture quality is good and with the 16gb disk I have inside I can take tons of pictures or long videos. Since I know this camera so well, when I went to replace the one I dropped in the water (my bad) I chose to purchase the same unit again because I didn’t see the need for a new version at higher cost when this one does such a great job. It is so portable and people are shocked at the quality of the video’s I am able to take with it. I also love the fact that it will adjust for macro pictures so I can take up close shots. It is small enough to fit in my purse or pocket so it goes with me everywhere. The battery charges quickly and compared to AA batteries lasts much longer.

   I have a nice SLR camera that I love, but it can be cumbersome sometimes. I wanted to get a small point and shoot camera that I could use in situations where it just wasn’t practical to take a large camera. I tried a Kodak, Nikon Coolpix and another Canon model before trying this one and loving it. Compared to the other three, this one had very good quality pictures in low light and had the least grainy pictures. I bought it just before a trip to Guatemala where I took 6GB of pictures and video and I was very pleased with the overall quality. Not quite as good as an SLR, but the closest thing I’ve found in a point-and-shoot.

   I have had a number or digital cameras – Kodak, Sam sung, Canon – as well as a long list of 35mm slide cameras. This Canon SD780IS camera easily upstages all of my previous cameras in picture quality and ease of use. The camera is small and is not easy to handle if you are used to bigger cameras with intuitive finger locations. I have a tendancy to let the camera slip out my grasp. The only problem that I have encountered involved loading the Canon software on my XP-SP3 PC. I had Canon vs 33 loaded and the instructions did not address the process to load the newer version 46. Something got corrupted and I finally had to email and call for assistance which did not resolve the problem and let the install take place. I finally had to edit the registry to clear locked values. All is operational now and the software recognizes my Canon A590 and SD780IS cameras properly.

   I gave this camera to my wife for her birthday. Overall the camera works well and the small viewfinder is handy if it’s too bright outside to see the screen. The small size of the camera (smaller than a deck of cards) was great per she tucks it into her jean’s pocket to carry it. The camera has a minimal lag time to take a photo and repeat shots. Overall the picture quality is good and the camera had high ratings by an independent consumer research agency.

   The biggest annoyance is that when downloading pictures to your computer it saves all of the pictures by date. For example, all of the pictures you took on 5/18/2010 will be in one folder, then all of the pictures you took on 5/19, 5/20 and 5/21 will all be in their own separate own file folders. It would be far easier have the option to group all of the photo’s together into one event (i.e. May 2010 trip to beach) To correct you then have to go into windows manager and re-categories/re-arrange the photo’s. The operating manual suggests that this might be able to be changed but it is not easy to do if it is at all.

   The second biggest annoyance is that you cannot upload photos directly from the camera to a website like I-photo or [...]. The software forces you to first download the photo’s to your PC then upload them to the website, unless you use Cannon’s own photo website. To circumvent this we tried to take the SDHC card out of the camera and put it into the combo disk drive on our computer to upload the photos from the drive to the internet. We were unable to do this, not sure if it’s the drive that malfunctioning or if the camera somehow prevents you from doing this by the format is saves the pictures in.

   Overall, great compact camera and I think it was good for the price we paid. My wife does not like it because it is not easy to upload photos to a non cannon website like her clunky old Olympus camera was.
