I am really disappointed. I’ve been using older discontinued Canon camcorders that have mic jacks for professional mics (so few do) and I wanted to finally transition from mini DV to flash cards for reliability, but the image quality is so inferior to my 5 year old canon camcorder.
I work with these cameras and it is imperative for my work that the image is flattering to the face. I tweaked all the settings on this camera and the image quality is so poor. Also, forget ‘cinema mode’. It’s jerky and stutters. makes me want to have a seizure.
It was hardly used, many 10 times total in the past 5 months. I hope the repair will be covered by the warranty. I don’t recommend anyone putting this much money in a camcorder this fragile.
I have been using HF200 for over 6 months and this has been a great camcorder.
PROS:
- great image quality
- perfect design and feel
- SDHC is a great feature. Good ridden tapes
CONS:
- Still pics average
- unit will not charge if the power is on. learned the hard way
Overall, great buy.
We bought it in June 2009 and the photo mode stopped working in the first 2 months of use. Cannon technical support is ridiculously expensive (US230+) and is also very far for us living in Manhattan.
I dont recomend the camera and never again will buy any Cannon product.
i’ve used this camera for several months, after buying it here on amazon. i love it. it takes great quality video, at adjustable resolutions. i work for a commercial television station and this camera rivals the equipment our photographers use at work.
i bought a 32gb sd card, which holds more than 2 hours of video. it’s more than enough for my uses.
the colors are great, i have heard complaints about low-light performance, and i must somewhat agree that its low-light performance is not superb. it is above average, though, for a camera in this category.
i import the videos directly into final cut pro, and it works great for that application.
i’ve taken this camera across the country and it has proved durable in many environments. the only physical problem i’ve encountered was my fault. i took it to the great sand dunes national park in colorado and used it while sand was blowing everywhere. the bottom half of the lens cover became stuck but i was able to use some compressed air and clean it out. it is no longer an issue.
if i were to wish for one thing for this camera, it’s that the still camera was of higher quality. it just doesn’t compare to the canon still-only cameras.
