This is an awesome device. You don’t have to do anything to it to get the recording going. It tells you if the line is on by light. It also has a button to test the phone line to make sure the phone line is operational. Other than that, it is plug-n-play. You follow the instructions and you got your phone line tapped. You plug the line out to a device (tape recorder, digital recorder with mic-in option, etc.) But DO NOT plug the line out into your PC. You get nasty feedback on both your phone and on the PC. Use something else to record your calls.
Overall, it is an effective and inexpensive means to record calls (both sides of the the call sound great) for whatever purposes you have. I have tried using a fax/voice modem combined with software, speakerphone to mic, everything, and this is the best one yet – it works, where others failed – the sound quality is decent as long as you keep it off your PC. You do need a compatible device for recording, which is little to ask for a land-line recorder. I have mine plugged into RCA Cassette Recorder and Player -AC-DC (mic in), press record when making outgoing or receiving incoming calls, and it’s done. Unplug the device from the tape recorder, plug the speaker-out into the mic input on pc, and record to digital file.
This I like for a geeky fun toy. I use it to obtain audio from phone calls and messages. Then I transfer the recordings to my computer to create custom ring tones and other home recording fun. The recordings are clear and both sides of the conversation are at the same volume level unlike some other devices I’ve tried. If I was in the spy business or paranoid, it would be a great tool for surreptitiously recording phone calls.
