I just want to comment on Tom Toms customer support team. I had some problems getting my 30 day free map update guarantee to download into my unit and they stepped right in and made sure that I was able to get it. They answered my email messages in a very timely manner and really seemed concerned about my problem.They were great.I will be sure to recommend Tom Tom to all my friends.
I am a Tom-Tom fan…so pretty easy to please with a Tom-Tom. The only issues are that you cannot store enough addresses and there is a bit of a lag between touching the screen and it registering that you touched it. You have to be careful not to get impatient and touch it twice as it will advance past the point you want.
Right out of the box, the GPS worked great. It is easy and very intuitive to use, but I have had a few instances where the pre-loaded maps were very out-of-date. The cost of buying a new set is prohibitive, this seems like a business model comparable to inkjet printers – buy cheap hardware and get dinged on updated software. Still, it is accurate enough to work with.
Screen legibility is perfect, the touchscreen accurate, and voice instructions are correct and not too frequent. The mount is very practical in that it is easy to detach, leaving no trace of a portable GPS to would-be thieves. The battery has a virtually non-existent life, so that you cannot program an address and then move the unit to your car. The programming always has to happen with the GPS plugged in.
Overall, I am very satisfied with my purchase, as this GPS does what I need it to do. More current maps would be a bonus…
It’s pretty hard to find in GPS specification how many POI are included. So I have called customer support. They told me that I have to download a software, then from the software I have the choice of 7 millions POI but I can choose only 96 to be transfer to the GPS.
I asked many time customer support if they are certain of this and confirmed 5 times.
Magellan often come with 6 millions, to compare with 96. TomTom not for me. Best case scenario is that TomTom can have more than 96 POI but they have bad customer support.
As you may have found from other reviews Tomtom does not provide updated maps with there own refurbished product. Why? I don’t know. Even without an updated set of maps though you should expect the current set to include information on a hotel in Phoenix that has been there since 1929 but my tomtom did not and could not even locate the damn thing once I found the physical address on google which sort of defeats having a tomtom in the first place. My recommendation Get a Garmin this product is useless
